The Ferrari 250 GTO is both a road car and a racing car produced by Ferrari in the early 1960s. It is considered the quintessential Ferrari and is still one of the best known and most popular cars of all time.
The number 250 indicates the displacement of each cylinder of its 3000 cc V12 engine while GTO stands for "Gran Turismo Omologata." This abbreviation would not be used thereafter for several years until the introduction in 1984 of the Ferrari 288 GTO.
During the raging Cobra-Ferrari war, to maintain the model's competitiveness in International Championship for GT Manufacturers races, Ferrari put on the track for the 1964 season an evolution of the model called the 250 GTO II series or 250 GTO/64, featuring a different body and various refinements. Three cars were built to this standard, while four other cars from Series I were fitted with the new bodywork.
